A compact fortified wine village in the Haut-Rhin, its sixteenth-century walls enclosing a single main street of elaborately decorated half-timbered houses that has remained virtually unchanged for four centuries. Riquewihr is one of the best-preserved Renaissance villages in France, producing Riesling and Gewurztraminer from the surrounding Schoenenbourg grand cru vineyard. The Dolder tower at the north gate and the Tour des Voleurs at the south have been preserved as small museums.
