France's premier mountaineering and skiing town, lying in a deep valley between the Mont Blanc massif and the Aiguilles Rouges, with vertical relief among the greatest of any Alpine resort. The Mer de Glace glacier, accessible by the historic Montenvers rack railway, is the longest glacier in France at over six kilometres. The town hosts the UTMB ultra-trail race in late August and serves as the start of the Tour du Mont Blanc long-distance trail.
