At 73 metres, Pistyll Rhaeadr is the tallest waterfall in Wales and one of the seven wonders of Wales as listed by the eighteenth-century traveller Thomas Pennant. The falls drop in two stages down a cliff of ancient Silurian rock, passing through a natural arch partway down. The head of the Afon Rhaeadr valley in the Berwyn Mountains is accessible by a single-track road from Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, and the surrounding slopes are open moorland.
