A market town in a deep valley carved by the River Dee through the Berwyn Mountains, Llangollen is dominated by the ruins of Castell Dinas Brân on a conical hill above the town. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site carrying the Llangollen Canal 38 metres above the Dee on nineteen masonry arches, lies two kilometres east of the town and is one of Thomas Telford's most celebrated engineering achievements. The annual International Musical Eisteddfod has drawn choirs and folk dancers from around the world since 1947.
