The highest peak in south Wales and in the whole of Britain south of Snowdonia, Pen y Fan reaches 886 metres and is characterised by a distinctive flat-topped summit with a steep northern escarpment of Old Red Sandstone. The path from the Storey Arms on the A470 is the most direct ascent, gaining the summit ridge and traversing to the companion peak Corn Du. The northern face and the Neuadd Reservoirs to the south provide contrasting photographic subjects in different light conditions.
