Positioned on a sheer rock above the coastal plain of Cardigan Bay, Harlech Castle was built by Edward I between 1282 and 1289 and is considered one of the finest examples of concentric medieval military architecture in Europe. The castle was briefly held by Owain Glyndwr during the Welsh revolt of 1404 and later provided the inspiration for the folk song 'Men of Harlech'. From the battlements, on clear days, the Snowdonia mountains behind and the Llŷn Peninsula across the bay are simultaneously visible.
