One of the most impressive fortresses in the network of Iron Ring castles built by Edward I of England in the late thirteenth century, Conwy Castle commands the estuary of the River Conwy from a rocky promontory. Eight round towers and twin barbicans encircle a well-preserved interior that retains its original plan clearly legible. The medieval town walls, which survive in their entirety, are integrated with the castle to form a single UNESCO World Heritage defensive system.
