A limestone upland landscape in the northern Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales National Park is characterised by deep valleys, moorland plateaus, and the distinctive pavements of white limestone that cap many of the hilltops. Malhamdale, Swaledale, and Wharfedale each present a different expression of the Dales character — from the vertical limestone cliff of Malham Cove to the wide hay meadows of Swaledale. The Three Peaks — Whernside, Ingleborough, and Pen-y-ghent — are the defining landmarks and subject of a classic circular challenge walk.
