Home to Britain's oldest university, Oxford is a dense accumulation of medieval and early modern collegiate architecture arranged around narrow lanes and small quadrangles. The Bodleian Library, the Radcliffe Camera, and the Bridge of Sighs are among the most photographed buildings, but the true character of the city emerges in the quieter college gardens and the meadow paths along the Thames and Cherwell. The view of the spires from South Parks Road or the eastern slopes of Headington remains one of England's classic urban panoramas.
