A small village in the heart of the Lake District, Grasmere is inseparably linked with William Wordsworth, who lived nearby at Dove Cottage for nine years and is buried in the churchyard of St Oswald's. The surrounding fells rise steeply from the lake and village, making it one of the most enclosed and atmospheric of the Lakeland settlements. Grasmere gingerbread, made to a recipe dating from 1854, remains a distinctive local product.
