A small, intimate lake between Grasmere and Ambleside, Rydal Water is set against wooded crags that provide a layered backdrop prized by photographers. The northern shore path follows the old coffin route used by villagers carrying their dead to Grasmere church. Rydal Mount, the home of poet William Wordsworth for the last 37 years of his life, overlooks the water from the southern hillside.
