Suilven is a quartzite mountain rising abruptly from the ancient Lewisian gneiss moorland of Assynt in northwest Sutherland, its elongated ridge and western dome presenting a striking profile that appears almost isolated from surrounding ground. The standard ascent involves a long approach across open bogland before the steep scramble to the ridge. Its distinctive shape, known locally as the Sugar Loaf, is visible from great distances across the Flow Country and is one of Scotland's most individual mountains.
