The Cairngorms National Park is the largest national park in the United Kingdom by area, encompassing a high arctic-alpine plateau, ancient Caledonian pinewoods, and the headwaters of several major Scottish rivers. Red squirrels, ospreys, red kites, and capercaillie inhabit the park's diverse habitats. The plateau supports Britain's only free-ranging reindeer herd, introduced in 1952, and offers extensive trails for hillwalking, mountain biking, and winter skiing.
