Latvia's largest and oldest national park follows the deeply incised valley of the Gauja river through sandstone bluffs, mixed forest, and medieval castle ruins in the Vidzeme Highlands. The river has carved the sandstone bedrock into caves, grottos, and exposed cliff faces up to 40 metres high — a striking landscape for a country with no significant mountains. The towns of Sigulda and Cēsis within the park offer access points and the remains of Livonian Order fortresses.
