A small medieval town in the Gauja National Park whose ruined Livonian Order castle, founded in the 13th century, is the largest castle ruin in Latvia. The town centre has preserved a compact historic street pattern with wooden-balconied merchant houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The surrounding valley offers walking trails through sandstone outcrops and riverside forest to viewpoints above the Gauja river bends.
