A Dutch Renaissance palace built in the early 17th century for King Christian IV, occupying three small islands in a lake at Hillerød in northern Zealand. The castle is the largest Renaissance building in Scandinavia and houses the Museum of National History, with a collection of Danish portraits and interiors spanning five centuries. The baroque garden on the lakeside was restored in the 20th century to its 17th-century design with clipped hornbeam alleys and geometric parterres.
