A small island in the South Funen Archipelago characterised by a near-intact 18th and 19th-century built environment of half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes, and historic harbours. The main town of Ærøskøbing is among the best-preserved merchant towns in Scandinavia and a UNESCO candidate site. The island's modest size — roughly 30 kilometres long — makes it navigable by bicycle, and the surrounding waters are popular with traditional wooden-boat sailors.
