A Danish island in the southern Baltic Sea lying much closer to Sweden and Germany than to the rest of Denmark, with a geology and character quite distinct from the flat landscapes of the Danish mainland. The northern coast is a rugged granite cliff face, while the south shores taper to white sandy beaches. Four round churches — unique circular medieval structures found nowhere else in Denmark — punctuate the rural interior alongside distinctive smoked-herring smokeries.
