A city on the southwest coast of Norway and the administrative centre of Rogaland county, historically significant as a centre of the Norwegian oil and gas industry and, before that, the sardine canning trade. The old town district of Gamle Stavanger preserves over 170 white-painted wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, constituting one of the largest collections of pre-industrial wooden townscapes in northern Europe. The city is the main gateway for access to Lysefjord, Preikestolen, and Kjerag.
