A low, flat coastal plain south of Stavanger in Rogaland county, one of the largest unbroken stretches of coastline in Norway and largely protected as a nature reserve. The area is characterised by long sandy beaches backed by dunes, shallow lakes, and wetlands that serve as important stopover habitat for migrating wading birds. The light at Jæren, particularly in late afternoon on overcast days, has a particular quality that has attracted Norwegian artists and photographers for generations.
