An archipelago in Nordland county immediately north of Lofoten, comprising five main islands — Hinnøya, Langøya, Andøya, Hadseløya, and Børøya — with a gentler topography than its famous southern neighbour. The islands are known for whale watching, particularly sperm whale and orca sightings in the Vesterålen Sea, and for large seabird colonies including northern gannet and puffin. The scenery is less dramatic than Lofoten but the wildlife interest and relative tranquillity attract independent travellers.
