A narrow strait near Bodø in Nordland county that generates one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, with water speeds reaching up to 40 kilometres per hour as the tide forces vast volumes of seawater through the channel. The resulting whirlpools and eddies, known as maelstroms, create a constantly changing surface that is a spectacle in itself and also attracts large populations of fish, making Saltstraumen a destination for both observers and anglers.
