The administrative centre of Svalbard and the northernmost settlement in the world with a permanent civilian population, situated on the west coast of Spitsbergen at approximately 78 degrees north. The town was established as a coal-mining settlement in the early 20th century and retains colourful wooden barrack-style buildings from that era alongside modern research facilities and visitor infrastructure. It serves as the primary entry point for expeditions into the surrounding Arctic wilderness.
