A 35-kilometre-long fjord south of Ålesund, bordered by the Sunnmøre Alps which rise to over 1,500 metres on both sides, creating one of the most enclosed and dramatic fjord landscapes in Norway. Unlike neighbouring Geirangerfjord, Hjørundfjord receives far fewer visitors and retains a quiet, largely undeveloped character. The ferry service connecting small villages along its shores is a functional service as much as a scenic experience.
