Stoclet House

Money was no object when banker Adolphe Stoclet hired Josef Hoffmann of the Vienna Secession in 1905, and the architect answered with a private house conceived as a total work of art. Completed in 1911, its severe marble-clad geometry pointed beyond Art Nouveau toward Art Deco and modernism, while inside, friezes by Gustav Klimt and work by Koloman Moser complete the ensemble — preserved down to the original fixtures and furnishings. UNESCO inscribed the Brussels landmark in 2009.
