Sørvágsvatn, also called Leitisvatn, is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands and is famous for an optical illusion that makes it appear to float above the ocean cliffs far below when viewed from a particular elevated position on the southern ridge. The lake actually sits only about 30 metres above sea level, but the perspective from the hiking trail collapses the near cliff and ocean into a startling visual effect. The hike to the viewpoint is guided-only to manage visitor impact.
