Five towers bristle above the crossing of Notre-Dame in Tournai, a silhouette unlike any other cathedral in Europe. The vast Romanesque nave, raised during the first half of the 1100s, carries richly sculpted capitals, while the choir was rebuilt a century later in pure Gothic — making the building a lesson in the passage between the two great medieval styles. UNESCO inscribed Tournai's cathedral in 2000.
