The Belfry of Tournai is considered the oldest surviving belfry in Belgium, begun in the late twelfth century and raised over later centuries to about 72 metres. A symbol of the town's medieval liberties, it stands near the great five-towered cathedral in one of the country's oldest cities. Visitors climb some 250 steps past the bell chamber to a viewing gallery overlooking the Scheldt river and the surrounding Walloon countryside. Both the belfry and cathedral are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
