Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls where groundwater seeps through a lava field and cascades across a long, curtain-like formation directly into the Hvítá River. The water emerges clear and turquoise against the darker volcanic rock, and in autumn the surrounding birch woodland turns yellow and orange. Adjacent Barnafoss, a few hundred metres upstream, offers a contrasting turbulent rapid in a narrow gorge.
