A historic settlement in the west, best known as the home of the medieval chieftain and writer credited with composing key works of Norse literature and mythology in the thirteenth century. A restored stone-lined geothermal bathing pool fed by a hot spring, associated with him, survives beside the modern buildings. A research centre and church now occupy the site, one of the intellectual hubs of the medieval commonwealth and a touchstone of the island's literary heritage.
