After French artillery flattened the heart of Brussels in 1695, the city's guilds rebuilt their square in one sustained burst — which is why the Grand-Place feels so astonishingly unified, its gabled guildhalls rising in gilded Baroque splendour around the Gothic town hall. Political and commercial life converged here for centuries, and the ensemble remains among Europe's most beautiful squares. UNESCO inscribed La Grand-Place in 1998.
