Timur was born near Shakhrisyabz, and the conqueror repaid his hometown with monuments to match imperial Samarkand — above all the colossal ruined portal of his Ak-Saray palace. The historic centre's mosques, mausoleums and old quarters chart the city's flowering under the Temurids in the 15th and 16th centuries. UNESCO inscribed Shakhrisyabz in 2000.
