France's gift for the centenary of American independence arrived in crates: Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's copper colossus, engineered inside by Gustave Eiffel, was assembled at the mouth of New York Harbour and unveiled in 1886. For generations of immigrants sailing past, Liberty lifting her torch was the first sight of the new world. UNESCO added the statue to the World Heritage List in 1984.
