Hominid footprints pressed into volcanic ash 3.6 million years ago at Laetoli make the Ngorongoro Conservation Area a cradle of the human story — and its centrepiece, the vast Ngorongoro Crater, is the world's largest caldera, teeming with wildlife. Maasai herders have grazed cattle among the wild herds since before the area's establishment in 1959, and wildebeest and zebra still surge across its plains on migration. UNESCO inscribed this Mixed site in 1979.
