Brick patterns, glazed roof tiles and domes crowd the skyline of the former Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans in Chernivtsi, designed by the Czech architect Josef Hlavka and built between 1864 and 1882. Now home to the city's university, the historicist ensemble of church, seminary, monastery and gardens gathers influences reaching back to Byzantium and speaks of Orthodox standing within the tolerant Habsburg empire. UNESCO listed it in 2011.
