A minaret 60 metres tall still spikes the skyline of Kunya-Urgench, once the capital of Khorezm on the banks of the Amu Darya in north-western Turkmenistan. Mausoleums, fortress remains and caravanserai gates raised between the 11th and 16th centuries testify to craftsmanship so influential that its echoes reached Iran, Afghanistan and the Mughal buildings of India. UNESCO inscribed the old town in 2005.
