Where the Bosphorus meets the Sea of Marmara, Istanbul has commanded the passage between Europe and Asia for over two thousand years — as Byzantium, Constantinople and the Ottoman capital in turn. Its historic areas hold the ancient Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia's 6th-century dome and the Süleymaniye Mosque raised by Sinan in the 16th century, landmarks of successive empires stacked within one city. UNESCO inscribed these quarters in 1985.
