Diyarbakır Fortress and Hevsel Gardens Cultural Landscape

Walls of dark basalt run 5.8 kilometres around Diyarbakır, studded with towers and gates and bearing 63 inscriptions left by the powers — Roman, Sassanid, Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman — that successively held this escarpment above the Tigris. Below the ramparts, the Hevsel Gardens spread toward the river, a fertile ribbon that has watered and fed the city for centuries. UNESCO inscribed fortress and gardens together as a cultural landscape in 2015.
