Archaeological Site of Troy

No siege in literature looms larger than the one Homer set at Troy, where Achaean warriors from Greece besieged the city late in the 13th or early 12th century B.C. Yet the mound at Hisarlık holds far more than legend: some 4,000 years of layered settlement document the earliest meeting of Anatolian and Mediterranean civilizations. Heinrich Schliemann began digging here in 1870, opening one of archaeology's most storied excavations. UNESCO inscribed Troy in 1998.
