White travertine terraces spill down a cliff nearly 200 metres high at Pamukkale — the 'Cotton Palace' — where hot, mineral-rich springs have petrified into pools and frozen cascades. On the plateau above, the Attalid kings of Pergamon founded the spa town of Hierapolis late in the 2nd century B.C., leaving baths, temples and other Greek-era monuments beside the shimmering formations. The Mixed site entered UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1988.
