Rock-cut tombs and pillar monuments distinguish Xanthos, once the proud capital of ancient Lycia, and the nearby sanctuary of Letoon, where the Lycians worshipped Leto and her twins. Their funerary art records a culture absorbing Greek influence without surrendering its own identity, and inscriptions found here remain the key to the Lycians' Indo-European language. UNESCO inscribed the twin sites in 1988.
