Colossal stone heads lie toppled beside their thrones on the summit of Nemrut Dağ, where King Antiochus I of Commagene (69–34 B.C.) built himself a mountaintop tomb-sanctuary of Hellenistic ambition. His kingdom, born from the fragments of Alexander's empire, claimed descent through both Greek and Persian royal lines, and its gods fuse both traditions in a single pantheon. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1987.
