Stone lions still flank the gate of Hattusha, the city on the central Anatolian steppe from which the Hittite Empire dominated Anatolia and northern Syria during the 2nd millennium B.C. Temples, royal residences and mighty fortifications trace its urban plan, while the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya nearby preserves processions of gods carved in stone. UNESCO inscribed the Hittite capital in 1986.
