Carved stone erupts around the doorways of the Great Mosque of Divriği in eastern Anatolia — sculpture of such flamboyant invention that no other Islamic building quite compares. Emir Ahmet Shah founded the mosque and its adjoining hospital in 1228–29, and its builders paired the riotous portals with austere interior walls and masterly vaulting beneath two cupolas. UNESCO inscribed this remote masterpiece in 1985.
