Good to know
An amphitheatre built for 35,000 spectators dwarfs the small Tunisian town around it: El Jem, North Africa's grandest Roman arena, raised in the 3rd century when the region grew rich on olive oil. Among the best-preserved monuments of its kind anywhere, it conveys the reach and ambition of Imperial Rome at its height. UNESCO inscribed the amphitheatre in 1979.
