Each winter, ducks, geese, storks and flamingoes descend by the hundred thousand on Lake Ichkeul, the great wetland in northern Tunisia where migrating birds pause to feed and nest. The lake is the sole survivor of a chain of lakes that once stretched across North Africa, which makes its waters as significant as its birdlife. UNESCO inscribed Ichkeul National Park in 1980.
