Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona

Geologists have travelled to the Glarus Alps since the 18th century to read a story written openly in the rock: ancient, deep-lying strata thrust bodily over much younger layers as colliding continents pushed up the Alps. Across 32,850 mountainous hectares, with seven summits topping 3,000 metres, the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona exposes that overthrust with rare three-dimensional clarity and also holds the biggest post-glacial landslide of the central Alpine region. UNESCO inscribed the site in 2008.
