Stone-walled vineyard terraces climb the slopes between Lake Geneva and the hillside villages of Vaud for roughly 30 kilometres, from the Château de Chillon toward the edge of Lausanne. Benedictine and Cistercian monks organized these vineyards in the 11th century — vines may have grown here even in Roman times — and generations of winegrowers have kept the terraces productive for the prized wines they still yield. Lavaux joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007.
