Hidden in a high valley of the Grisons close to the Italian border, the Benedictine Convent of St John at Müstair guards an artistic treasure out of proportion to its modest size: Switzerland's richest cycle of figurative wall paintings, created around A.D. 800 in the age of Charlemagne, together with later Romanesque frescoes and stucco work. As an exceptional witness to Carolingian monastic culture, the convent received UNESCO World Heritage status in 1983.
