The Ampera Bridge spans the Musi River in Palembang, the largest city of southern Sumatra, linking the two halves of a settlement that has traded along the river for over a thousand years. Completed in 1965, its central span was originally designed to lift on cables strung between twin towers to let tall ships pass, though the mechanism was later fixed in place. Painted red and floodlit at night, the bridge is a symbol of the city. Riverside jetties nearby offer boat trips past floating houses and the historic waterfront.
